EBay is an online marketplace specializing in the consumer to consumer sales. Founded by Pierre Omidyar, EBay quickly became one of the largest online markets in the world.
History
EBay started as a small home run auction website in 1995 and was soon transformed into the giant it is today. One of the first products to be sold on eBay was a broken laser pointer, which coincidentally was bought by a collector of laser pointers. Pierre Omidyar quickly recognized the necessity and value of his website and soon monetized the auctioning website.
Today eBay operates in over 30 different countries and sells more than $2000 worth of products every single second. Originally eBay was a strict auctioning website, where sellers could put up their items and buyers would bid for it, the product going to the highest bidder. As of recent, they have shifted to a more familiar marketplace style, offering auctions as well as products with fixed prices.
Values
Headquartered in San Jose, California, eBay is big on the environmentally friendly approach of running a company. Their headquarters have solar panels which account to around 20% of their power consumption, thereby reducing their carbon footprint and emissions.
The headquarters conforms to the Leeds gold standard for eco-friendly building and has various other measures to minimize energy usage, such as continually monitored lighting systems, automatic windows and air conditioning.
Products
As most of the products are sold by individual sellers rather than the company as a whole, the international shipping and return policies vary. When it comes to their products, they have an expansive collection, from art to electronics, fashion, home appliances and everything else in between.
EBay is one of the few marketplaces where a customer could purchase anything they wish for and even have multiple sellers for the same products, so the benefit of lower prices is passed on to the customers.
