Swatch is a Swiss watchmaker under the Swatch group. Founded in 1983 by Nicholas Hayek, the name is a combination of the words “second watch,” as it is meant to be used on a more casual basis when compared to other Swiss watchmakers such as Omega and Rolex to name a couple.
Due to the aggressively priced watches, Swatch instantly became a hit among youngsters and adults alike, offering the best Swiss manufacturing at a low cost. Swatch initially aimed to beat the Japanese Casio and Seiko at their own game of quartz movements, but eventually forked off to being a casual luxury brand.
About Swatch
Swatch advertises their watches as being a casual, fun, fashion statement or accessory rather than going the trivial, age-old route of being a luxury Swiss watchmaker.
Using almost completely automated production lines, Swatch aims to be a low-cost alternative for Swiss luxury watches. The boom of quartz digital watches caused Swatch to change direction and instead of following market trends, they decided to go back to their roots with classy, trendy analog watches.
Swatch is extremely customer oriented, with their 2 years no questions asked warranty period of defective timepieces, and well written after sales self-maintenance guides for the watches available on their website. They also offer a lifetime free battery replacement for any watch as long as proof of purchase is shown.
Products
Swatch does not offer online shopping, although, with a wide selection of stores throught the globe, it isn't a very difficult task to purchase one at a store. The striking distinguishing factor that separates Swatch from other watch brands, is the sheer variety of colours, shapes, sizes and designs they come in, as they are meant to be an accessory rather than a classic timepiece.
The Swatch originals collection consists of watches which were the original building blocks of the company, with acrylic or plastic builds. The originals collections come in a staggering number of designs, shapes, colours and straps. There is surely something for everyone with the originals collections, be it for a kid, teenager or adults.
The Swatch irony collection ironically has absolutely no relation to irony, but in fact, refers to their selection of watches with metal builds. These can have an automatic mechanism, quartz, or chronograph movements.
The Swatch skin collection prides itself in having watches less than 4 millimeters thick; this collection consists of watches such as the Skin Chronograph which is the holder of the prestigious Guinness World record for the thinnest plastic watch ever made.
Other than these classic collections, there are some watches, or swatches, which are more unique such as the Swatch Bijoux, made in partnership with Swarovski; the Bijoux line is a fashion statement studded with only the best crystals from Swarovski. Swatch also released watches with NFC capabilities known as the Swatch Pay after partnering with Visa, these watches can be used to make payments at Visa authorized terminals. They also have more conventional, modern LCD watches.
In 2013, Swatch introduced the Sistem51. It was, at the time, the world's first watch having mechanical movements with completely automated assembly. Assembled entirely by machinery in a production line, Swatch eliminates the need for human workers and hence results in almost no caveats during manufacturing which can lead to defects. Having just 51 total parts, the watch itself and the movements are completely encased in a transparent, acrylic case which can be used to view the inner workings. The case is completely shut and disregards the need for any kind of maintenance with an automatic winding system, making the watch impermeable to any kind of external environmental conditions. The Sistem51 boasts an exceptional shelf battery life of 90 days, making it the perfect watch for hardcore users.
